Leadership Greater Hartford's
Benefits to the Community

The community benefits from Leadership Greater Hartford’s growing corps of dedicated leaders, volunteers and supporters, each of whom gains a better understanding of others’ perspectives and of regional issues.  LGH graduates and members act to improve the quality of life in their communities by:

  • Serving on hundreds of nonprofit boards of directors;
  • Running for political office at the town, city and state level;
  • Bridging political, economic and geographic differences, via the LGH network to address regional issues cooperatively;
  • Supporting area nonprofits through volunteer projects and hands-on activities; and
  • Mentoring youth and other emerging leaders.

The list of projects undertaken by Leadership Greater Hartford, its task forces and its graduates is long and varied. Significant contributions include the following:

  • The refurbishing of Lozada Park, a playground in one of Hartford’s poorest neighborhoods.
  • The creation of “Readers as Leaders,” a literacy program that links middle schoolers with beginning readers.
  • Furnishing 30 transitional living units for women and children at My Sister’s Place.
  • Publication of guidebooks that promote the city’s neighborhoods and treasures.
  • Design and installation of a downtown sculpture, “Harvest Gate,” to encourage continuing commitments to solve hunger.
  • Customized leadership development programs for youth, retirees, parents, Latinos, and neighborhood residents..
