Leadership Greater Hartford's
People who are retired or of retirement age often have lots of energy and experience to share with the community. The Third Age Initiative from Leadership Greater Hartford offers a structured and dynamic program for meeting like-minded individuals, developing leadership skills and putting talents to work for the greater good.
Participants work on a team to complete a community action project over the course of a year. There is a day-long workshop once a week for 6 weeks, followed by a 2-day retreat. During the next 10 months, class teams develop and implement projects addressing an issue of their choice.
Participants range in age from 48 to 88 and come from over 30 communities in the Greater Hartford region. They bring a variety of socioeconomic, ethnic, educational, and cultural backgrounds to the group.
Team projects have included training middle school students to read to and mentor kindergartners, helping communities rehabilitate eyesores and develop parks, introducing arts and heritage to second graders, and encouraging the use of food stamps.
NOTE: The Moebius Ring, part of the program logo, is an ancient symbol of infinity, recycling and never ending. We’ve adopted it as a logo for the Third Age Initiative, where those of us in later life recycle our energy, talent and wisdom for the greater good and form friendships that are never ending.
