Leadership Greater Hartford's

Leaders on Board is a program created by Leadership Greater Hartford in partnership with the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut and the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.  Designed to fill the region’s need for qualified volunteers to serve on the boards of nonprofit organizations, Leaders on Board takes a unique approach.

The program attracts individuals who want to serve on a board, develop their leadership skills and serve the community.  Potential board members receive training in nonprofit organizational structure and management.  They are introduced to the role and responsibilities of board members and are encouraged to explore their skills and interests.

Nonprofit organizations in need of qualified board members participate in the program. They receive consulting to ensure they have identified board skills needed and will utilize these volunteers well. They get referrals to prospective board members and discounts on Leadership Greater Hartford training workshops and consulting services.

Qualified individuals and nonprofit managers then meet at an event called Express Match, a sort of "speed dating for nonprofits."  Quick introductions in a structured environment, using a tested method, allow all parties to efficiently ascertain whether there is a match in their needs and interests.

Leadership Greater Hartford facilitates the matches, putting people in touch with nonprofits where mutual interest was expressed.  We support both the volunteer at the nonprofit in the match and provide follow-up to monitor mutual success.

Since 2009, Leaders on Board has successfully matched over 100 prospective board members with over 40 nonprofit organizations.  Nearly 60 nonprofit organizations have participated in this program.
