Leadership Greater Hartford's
High school freshmen, sophomores and juniors can cure late summer boredom by attending this exciting program held in August. You have the opportunity to meet students from other schools and towns, to learn about yourself as a leader and to gain maturity and confidence.
Each day is different, as you do everything from outdoor challenge courses to community service projects. You will meet city leaders for conversation. You will try unusual new foods from restaurants you may not have heard of and make friends whose background and culture are very different from yours.
Give yourself a chance to grow and to achieve your potential at school, in clubs, at sports and at home.
Now in its fourth year, Summer Nexus is a seven-day leadership program that assembles motivated and energetic high school students from public and private schools for a crash course in leadership development and community involvement. Participants can:
- Break out of their usual routine and learn about themselves with new friends who will broaden their horizons.
- Gain new skills that will help them at home, at school and in job hunting
- Have new experiences that will expand their resume for college applications.
- Challenge them mentally, physically and socially.
- Meet Community Leaders who model the way and are dedicated to making this region the best it can be.
- Benefit from a chance to grow and to achieve their potential at school, in clubs, at sports and at home.
Summer Nexus 2011 runs from August 7-13 and will be based at Trinity College while utilizing other city locations. Students from diverse backgrounds will meet to learn about each other and the communities that surround them. The program begins mid afternoon on August 7 with an orientation and then an overnight retreat that will help build relationships and allow participants to step out of their comfort zone. From August 8th – 13th students will meet from 8:30am-5pm. These workshops will typically consist of a morning workshop, lunch with a community leader, an afternoon leadership activity, and planning a community service project. Workshops will include public speaking, diversity, conflict resolution, decision-making, personal finance, and college preparation. On August 13, students will implement the service project they have planned throughout the program. Family and friends are then invited to attend a graduation picnic. Spaces are limited for this program so apply as soon as possible.
